Show Notes

Gillian Schmitz, MD, FACEP is an Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University and an emergency physician at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. She currently serves as the Immediate Past President and a member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

In this episode, we discuss our career paths in military medicine, including being professors at The Uniformed Services University. Civilians can work as contractors and civil servants for the military, VA, and other government organizations. To learn more about government positions, check out USA jobs

We discussed an early career setback that spurred Gillian to consider a different career path. This ultimately led to her running for the ACEP board. She ultimately became ACEP President. We discuss the importance of physician leadership, current policy challenges, and the future of emergency medicine.

We deep dive into the EM workforce report and how many of the initial factors that went into the report are now obsolete.  Check out the Workforce homepage to learn about the latest updates and projections for the EM workforce.

We talk about ACEP successes, including The Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act, which aims to reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, and mental and behavioral health conditions among healthcare professionals.

We discuss the recent changes to EM billing and how ACEP is helping EM physicians understand the changes. The changes are meant to align better with what is necessary for an ED chart!

MicroSkills is built on one core, easy-to-learn principle: every big goal, complicated task, healthy habit, and, yes, even what we think of as character traits, can be broken down into small, learnable, skills that can be practiced, and incorporated real-time.
